Welcome to the Intermountain Center for Cognitive Therapy (ICCT) home page. "Cognitive" means one's ability to think and process thought. As an approach, cognitive therapy explores the individual's patterns of thought and discovers which thoughts are interfering with leading a productive, healthy, and functional lifestyle. Cognitive therapy has proven to be the most effective treatment approach designed to work with all populations and with a variety of difficulties. Cognitive therapy is based upon the idea that clients are responsible for their own treatment, and that clients and therapists work in a collaborative partnership with each other. As a technique, cognitive therapy is a wonderful problem solving approach. Cognitive therapy focuses on a client's thoughts, moods, behaviors, as well as the environment, in order to understand the origins of client problems. Thoughts play a powerful role in maintaining dysfunctional moods and behaviors. In turn, moods influence our thoughts which influence our behavior. Through cognitive therapy, client's are taught to identify, evaluate and change dysfunctional thinking patterns in order to facilitate the behavior change. |
